What is coaching?

Put simply, coaching is a structured and focused conversation on a topic you want to explore. It is led by you, and guided by the coach, with the ultimate goal of helping you achieve a change.

That change may be new thinking, new ideas, a new perspective or realising your own strengths – all that will lead you to where you want to be.

This is the foundation of coaching. Through the process of questioning, challenging, coaching tools and techniques the following can be achieved;

  • Realise your strengths – your personal resources
  • Dismantle doubts
  • Reduce anxiety
  • Deepen your self-awareness
  • Boost your wellbeing
  • Build new habits and routines for success

Just as a sports coach improves the performance of his players – a life coach, similarly, improves your performance by helping you see a bigger picture, gain greater insights and help you build and use your strengths in new ways.

Coaching is focused on the future – this is the main difference between coaching and counselling. Counselling is often mostly focused on the past and what has led you to where you are. Coaching is about taking where you are now and helping you move forward.

We are all human – and it is very human to get stuck in the same thinking and repeat the same actions and still not quite get where we want to be.

Below are some of things that commonly stop people from achieving;

  • Self-doubt
  • anxiety
  • nerves
  • not being able to see clearly through a problem
  • feeling that we aren’t ready yet
  • feeling not good enough

They are also big reasons why we sometimes don’t go for what we want or what freezes us in vital moments.

Coaching is one way to jump start the journey to overcoming these.

Although coaching is often goal orientated in can also be as simple as unpicking an issue to get clarity.

A coach is a thinking partner, a knowledgeable outside pair of eyes and ears that helps you openly reflect and looks at things both critically and creatively.

It is the coach’s job to listen and understand where you are now, where you want to be, and explore the steps of how you will get there – to find hidden strengths, discover new options and develop strategies to overcome what’s holding you back.

As humans, we all want to be seen, heard and understood – all of which are part of what a good coach will deliver.

Testimonials

Elizabeth Donker Curtius – Stunt professional and actress

She totally changed my mind-set for training. I hadn’t noticed how often I would say I was useless or that I couldn’t do something. By making me aware of this negative speech, Karis helped me train more positively which had huge impacts on my results!
